It’s Time To Be More Awesome

"I got a question for you: What are you teaching the world? How to be boring? How to be sad? No, no you’re not! You’re teaching the world what it looks like to be AWESOME. No matter who you are, somebody’s learning from you. Look for the awesome."

Awesomeness is contagious. You can really catch it if you’re near amazing people. It happens fast, too, almost without warning, so you have to be ready for it. You agree that you're assuming the risk when you get near them. It’s a particular disease this awesomeness! It starts a fever in you when you’re listening to the bearer, and then it sends shivers down your spine as they walk you through their story. It culminates with completely altering your vision and mind. Now that you’ve caught it, you see bright lights everywhere and your speech is impaired by a tremble that spurs from deep within you. And in no time, you’ve turned completely... awesome. For good! "You want to change the world? You gotta know about it!"

Last week was charged with so much awesome that I had to put it in words. This is a recipe that must be replicated. But to make it realistic and relevant you must know where to start. So I started two posts ago talking about wonderful altruistic people ready to give of themselves because they believe in community and humanity. I then moved on to explain how their actions gave others courage.

"It’s time to wake up people! … It’s time to be more awesome!…Life is school and you gotta show up"

Today I want to continue the fast unraveling saga with more inspiration. Awesome yields awesome, and cries for help reach the heroes in us. An answer that took me by surprise came from further away, but as ready as the others to help. Mr. Derek Casebolt, Sr. Sales Manager, Local, State and Education Government Sales for T-Mobile offered to be there for Milby High in any way possible.

Last Friday I watched a group of students, humbled by the title of their visitor, asking shyly questions about a land not-so-far-away full of wonders that they wanted to see. It was not a fairy tale, it was a talk about computer servers, software, and telecommunications nodes. It was their ardent desire to "see and do" with the specialists. And it came true! Mr. Casebolt will help them explore their passion for computers with engineers from T-Mobile, internships, and field trips to the most enticing place on earth for a computer science aficionado - the NOC (the T-Mobile's Network Operations Center in Frisco, TX). All of the sudden “everybody’s a teacher, and everybody’s a student” becomes true. Learning, anchored in our passions, takes the shape of a REAL thing. And who knows, maybe this is the first group to intern their way into the future engineers of T-Mobile...

"What are you going to teach the world? Let’s make some history. Together. Because it’s simple math: together we’re louder!"
